Nationalism before had a very different meaning from nationalism now. Before, nationalism meant the people who spoke the same language or shared a common ethnicity fought to build their own nation‐states. It had a more political meaning then, and they say that the greater your nationalism, the greater the ability to prevail. This meant that if people spoke and shared the same language and ethnicity, they would understand each other more and would have a better sense of cooperation with each other. The system of the government before was based on mainly monarchy. That meant only some or even one persons could have power over the rest. No one else had a say in anything happening in their nation. Nationalism before were only present in those with power. Kings or queens were the only nationalists then.
Now, things have changed. Many changes happened during the rule of the kings and queens, and of course, some people noticed that not all changes were fair. This lead to many wars and revolutions. Through these things, unknown people had suddenly become heroes because of their bravery to stand up for their nation. Since then, people took it as an honor to have that trait because it meant that they possessed bravery and strength. Nationalism could now come from anyone. This was very evident in the Philippines, especially during the Spanish period. The Spaniards had a hard time fully suppressing the Filipinos because certain nationalists would just come out from nowhere. These nationalists deserve respect for their actions and their bravery. They died knowing that they served and gave loyalty to their country. That is what nationalism means now, loving and serving one's own country. Democracy was born because of these many revolutions, and that meant that everyone was allowed and were capable of becoming heroes.
